  • Curriculum Support - Note that Scale How Cottage School covers a large portion of your curriculum subjects: recitation, composer study, artist study, poetry, hymn, folk song, handicraft, a portion of literature through Shakespeare and book club selections, special science study, geography, form III science, form III citizenship, PE, musical instrument through ukulele, and optional Spanish. These subjects are part of our school and your Charlotte Mason curriculum. The goal is to create community around these subjects and for them to be integrated into your homeschool, not considered "extra" work. Take that into consideration as you fill your remaining feast of subjects: Bible, math, literature, history, additional science, grammar, dictation, composition, brush drawing, Latin, sloyd, and maybe even Swedish drill. We recommend through our own experience and their efforts to align with Mason's philosophy, her original programmes, the PNEU, and their continued work and research; the following curriculums to be valid and reputable choices.

  1. How is a Charlotte Mason education different from a classical education? There are many reasons, but below is a fairly succinct and simple explanation.

Is the mind a vessel to be filled, or a spiritual organism with an appetite for all knowledge?  The trivium used in many classical schools approaches the mind as a vessel to be filled, and segments knowledge into a grammar stage, logic stage, and a rhetoric stage. Charlotte Mason saw the mind as an immature, but complete spiritual organism. She claimed that an intellectual diet of facts alone was like a meal of sawdust to the body and that the mind lives and grows upon ideas. And so, a CM curriculum emphasizes ideas which allow students to form relationships with knowledge rather than merely memorizing information about the subject matter.  She believed the child is capable of acquiring skills and cultivating higher order thinking throughout childhood under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
